Aoife's Trip to Ras Al Khaimah
By Aoife Dunphy
I recently travelled to Ras Al Khaimah on a fam trip organised by the Ras Al Khaimah tourist board. I travelled with my colleague Alison, and we got to see what this up-and-coming Emirati has to offer. Ras Al Khaimah offers a very different vibe to that of Dubai, with plenty of mountains & desert areas which make it ideal for adventure activities. However, there are also gorgeous luxury hotels & resorts to relax at.
Location
We flew with Emirates into Dubai DXB airport which took 6 hours 50 minutes going over & 7 hours 30 minutes coming back. Ras Al Khaimah is approximately 1 hour from Dubai airport. The locals say it is quicker travelling to RAK than it is to Dubai city due to the traffic. We stayed in two different hotels - Rixos Al Mairid Ras Al Khaimah & Double Tree by
Hilton Marjan Island. Rixos is slightly isolated compared to Marjan Island where you have a row of hotels & more currently being built, so I would say in years to come, Marjan Island will be the place to be.
What I Loved
I loved getting the chance to visit somewhere new. Ras Al Khaimah is still an upcoming Emirati with plenty of opportunities to grow, so it will be interesting to see how it develops in the coming years. The hotels were lovely & offered all the amenities we needed during our stay there.
Activities & Places to See
- We travelled 20 minutes from our first hotel to Suwaidi Pearl farm where we learned about the history of pearl farming. You can take a boat to the floating pearl farm where they show you how they farm oysters and retrieve the pearls from them which I found very interesting.
- Visit Jebel Jais, the UAE’s highest peak. Here, we did the worlds longest zipline & the Jais sledder, where you slide down the side of the mountain. This is perfect for anyone who wants to get their adrenaline pumping!
- Go on a desert safari, where you can go dune bashing in a 4x4 or alternatively take a quad bike.
Shopping & Nightlife
We did not get the opportunity to visit the shopping malls or any nightlife other than what the hotels offered but
each hotel did have an entertainment programme that seemed very good.
Bars & Restaurants
We ate at the hotels as we dined on a half board/all inclusive basis. There is a wide selection of foods on offer to suit everyone’s tastes, as well as some al la carte restaurants which specialise in different cuisine such as steak, Turkish food, etc.
